November 8th is Election Day! Get Ready to Vote!
Election day is Tuesday, November 8. In Virginia, we will be voting for candidates for the U.S. Congress House of Representatives and, depending on locality, for some local officials and ballot measures. This is the second of a series of bulletin announcements about voting that will run each week until right before the election.
Why Vote?
Our Catholic faith includes a rich tradition of teaching about and working for justice. There are seven themes of Catholic social teaching (https://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/catholic-social-teaching/seven-themes-of-catholic-social-teaching): the life and dignity of each human being; the call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; and care for creation. Each of these themes highlights our responsibilities as voters.
The dignity of each human being emphasizes that human life is sacred and that we should always work to protect life everywhere, including in our voting choices. This theme also highlights that systems of government can recognize the dignity of each person by ensuring and protecting every person’s right to vote and participate in the political process.
Registering to Vote and Checking Your Voting Registration Status
You can register to vote in person or online. The last day to register to vote is October 17th! You can go to the Virginia Department of Elections website to obtain information about how to register (in person or online) or to download a voter registration application that you can mail in here.
Registering to Vote in the Parish Voter Registration Campaign
St John Neumann will be offering opportunities to register to vote after many of the Masses starting on Sunday, 18 September. If you want to help register voters after Masses, contact John Dister at jmdister@gmail.com by 15 September.
What is your Congressional District for this Election? Has Redistricting Affected You?
Virginia changed its voting districts in the decennial reapportionment and redistricting mandated by the U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 2). As a result, some parishioners may be in a new Congressional district. Registered voters can look up their Congressional district by visiting this Department of Elections website: Department of Elections website. If you are not yet registered, you can also find out your Congressional district here and here.
