SPOT a Stroke, STOP a Stroke, SAVE a life! Seasons of Wellness Zoom-May 11

Every 40 seconds, someone in our country becomes the victim of a stroke, and every four minutes, a stroke kills someone. Strokes are the number one cause of death and permanent disability. Join our Parish Nurse and Dana Rizzo RN from Waltonwood Senior Living for another “Seasons of Wellness” Zoom presentation on Wednesday, May 11 at 10:30 am, as we look at what a stroke looks like!

We could alter 80% of those statistics if people recognized the signs of a stroke and sought early medical intervention, but most victims don’t arrive quickly enough for treatment.

With stroke, minutes, even seconds MATTER. But, first, someone must recognize the symptoms and call 911.

Spotting the signs of stroke is the first step to altering a fateful medical course.

To register: email Susan Infeld, Parish Nurse: sinfeld@saintjn.org.

Our May 11 Zoom is the FIRST STEP in SJN parish education as we move toward becoming a “Stroke Smart Faith Community.” Together, we can save lives!

Wells of Salvation – Water for the Poor Project

Drink water and help construct aqueducts and wells and provide water filtration systems in impoverished rural communities around the world.  This Lent you are encouraged to participate in the Wells of Salvation water for the poor project.  The organization Cross Catholic Outreach uses donated funds from individuals and groups and puts them toward this project.  How can drinking water help?

During any two weeks during Lent you are encouraged to substitute water for typical drinks that you enjoy, and set aside the cost equivalent toward a donation to the project.  At the end of the period make a check payable to “St. John Neumann” with “Water Project” in the memo line.  Drop off your donation at the Church office during office hours or at the Welcome Desk before or after weekend Masses through April 24.

Any questions about this project, contact Steve Knippler at sknippler@gmail.com.

Your support will help:

  • install 65 wells to provide clean water for four communities in Ghana, six communities in Malawi and 55 communities in Zambia;
  • repair an insufficient water system in Zambia; and
  • build eight sanitary latrines in Ghana.

Please Pray for the People of Ukraine – From Pope Francis

Appeal from Pope Francis on Ukraine/Llamamiento del Papa Francisco sobre Ucrania

“My heart aches greatly at the worsening situation in Ukraine. Despite the diplomatic efforts of the last few weeks, increasingly alarming scenarios are opening up. Like me, many people all over the world are feeling anguish and concern. Once again the peace of all is threatened by partisan interests. I would like to appeal to those with political responsibility to examine their consciences seriously before God, who is the God of peace and not of war; who is the Father of all, not just of some, who wants us to be brothers and not enemies. I pray that all the parties involved refrain from any action that would cause even more suffering to the people, destabilising coexistence between nations and bringing international law into disrepute.

And now I would like to appeal to everyone, believers and non-believers alike. Jesus taught us that the diabolical senselessness of violence is answered with God’s weapons, with prayer and fasting. I invite everyone to make next 2 March, Ash Wednesday, a Day of Fasting for Peace. I encourage believers in a special way to dedicate themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace preserve the world from the madness of war. ” Pope Francis on February 23, 2022

Statement from Bishop Michael F. Burbidge on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
It is with deep sorrow that we are witnessing Russia’s violent attack on the people of Ukraine resulting in loss of life and expansive devastation. Russia has created chaos, instability and a growing humanitarian crisis for Ukrainians and the rest of Eastern Europe. The Russian invasion of Ukraine should inspire all people of good will to pray and fast for the end of all violence in the region and for political leaders to find a pathway for peace.

We join with Pope Francis in his call for “those with political responsibility to examine their consciences seriously before God, who is the God of peace and not of war.” I will celebrate a “Mass for Peace and Justice in Ukraine and throughout the World” at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More on Monday, February 28 at 12:05 p.m. All are invited to attend. The Mass will be livestreamed on the diocesan YouTube Channel.

I ask the faithful to join in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in calling for an end to this violent attack. May Our Lord, the Prince of Peace, comfort the hearts of those in harm’s way in Ukraine and inspire those with influence and power to end this attack and restore stability.

Lenten Fasting Guidelines

Good Friday is an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal and two smaller meals that are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

“My friends.. we must keep Lent…We are obliged to perform the penitential acts that are within our reach.”
Blessed Louis  Brisson OSFS
