Between sundown on Thursday, June 18th, and sunrise the morning of June 19th Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation (NVHC) will host an evening of online provocation, revelation, education and reflection. The significance of the timing – the day in 1865 when word of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved people in the United States after two years of delay – cannot be understated. This day, this hour, demands that we seek a different way to bind us together while recognizing and honoring differences in identity, as well as the collective and individual moral failings that have brought us to this moment. The traditional Jewish practice of a tikkun, an overnight study and conversation, will open our minds to the complexity and urgency of what we hope will be a turning point.
